We share design inspiration, as well as other guides for measuring and fitting your stairway elements. How to measure a runner for your stairs Stair runners are great decorative elements that can add personality and flair to your hallway. Measure the full staircase Fix one end of a very long, flexible tape measure at the top of your stairs where you want your runner to start.
Fix your tape measure at each point where a riser the flat vertical part connecting the steps joins to the tread the step itself below it, until you reach point where you want your runner to end.
Your tape measure will show the total length of runner you need. Measure each individual stair Measure each tread the step itself and riser the flat vertical part connecting the steps individually, making a note of each measurement as you go. When measuring risers, you will need to measure from the top of the nose of the tread above to the point where the riser meets the tread below the crotch.
Thank you! The first time I ordered the runner for our stairs we did not have enough. It did not go over the bottom step or up to the top rung. This is the formula for measuring your stairs- Measure the rise and the run of your stairs multiplied by the number of stairs total.
Any flat landing is obviously extra and I always recommend adding 2 feet just in case. Make sure to use actual carpet padding for the tops of each step. I originally only used a non-slip rug grip based off of the tutorials I saw. He did not wrap it around the nose of the step. He left about an inch on each side under the runner where there was no pad, allowing the runner to lay flat. I watched as he installed the carpet and he did staples in a couple of spots.
This keeps the staples hidden and holds the stair runner in place. Also he used a tool I took a picture of to smooth in the staples and push the runner in tight. He would run that tool all across after each step was done over the staples and hit some in if they were noticeable.
I shared a little video as our new stair runner was being installed on my Instagram Stories- these were the questions I received-. Divide your final measurement total by 12 inches if you buy your runner by the foot, and round the answer up to the next foot. If sold by the yard, divide your total by 36 and round up to the next yard. For example, divide by 12 to determine the number of feet you need for your runner — For the yard, divide by 36 to get 6. It is common for the stair runner to be shorter on each side to expose part of the wood underneath. Start by attaching the piece of string under the top lip of the stairs where the rug will end. Use a piece of tape to secure string to the stair. Now run the string down the back of the step riser and attach it to the base of the step using tape.
Run the string over the step, wrap it over the lip and tape it under the lip if you want the rug to wrap around and underneath the lip then attach the string again at the bottom of the riser.
Otherwise if you wanted a waterfall look like pictured above run the string over the step and attach it at the bottom of the riser. Continue attaching the string down the stairs just as you would like the rug to look. When you reach the base of the steps you will want to mark this spot of the string using a piece of tape.
Do not attach the string to the bottom of the step, only mark your spot. Now you will take all of the string that you have attached to the stairs and measure it. You can tear it off to easily measure.
